Jammu and Kashmir Muslim League (JKML) and Jamaat-e-Islami expressing serious concern over the plight of political detainees in jails have demanded their unconditional release.
According to media sources, the JKML spokesman, Sajjad Ayubi in a statement issued in Srinagar said that party Chairman, Masarrat Aalam Butt and other leaders including Mohammad Rafiq Ganai, Abdul Ahad Parra, Asadullah Parray, Tariq Ahmad Ganai and Khurshid Ahmad Lone had been languishing in jails and being treated inhumanly.
He said that illegal detention of the Hurriyat leaders was being prolonged on one pretext or the other only to suppress their resolve and the ongoing liberation movement. He said that the freedom sentiment of the people of Kashmir could not be weakened through such cheap tactics. Jamaat-e-Islami spokesman, Advocate Zahid Ali, in a statement issued in Srinagar said the detainees have been deprived of their personal freedom for espousing and supporting the genuine cause of the Kashmiri people. He said, “In this public movement the women too have given supreme sacrifices and suffered a lot. Dukhtaran-e-Millat Chairperson, Aasiya Andrabi and her associate Fahmeeda Sofi have been detained under the draconian law, Public Safety Act (PSA) and lodged in Amphala Jail, Jammu, in the extreme hot weather conditions.
The spokesman said there are dozens of prisoners who have been awarded the life imprisonment for espousing the genuine cause and even after spending 15 to 20 years and even more in some cases are still languishing in the jails. “This discriminatory attitude shows the vicious plans of the authorities towards the hapless people here,” he deplored. Meanwhile, the spokesman of Muslim Deeni Mahaz (MDM) in a statement in Srinagar condemned the use of brute force by the forces against civilians in Shopian and other parts of the territory. He condemned the refusal by the authorities to allow family members of Aasiya Andrabi and her personal secretary Fahmeeda Sofi to see them in Amphala Jail, terming it the worst form of human rights violation. On the other hand, special prayers were offered for martyrs of Kashmir at an Iftar dinner organized by People’s Political Front at Dooru in Sopore. A large number of people from the zanigeer area attended the programme.
