According to media sources, Tufail Mattoo, a student of 12th class, was killed after being hit by a teargas shell fired by Indian police near Ghani Memorial Stadium in Srinagar on this day in 2010 when he was returning home from tuition. His killing had triggered massive anti-India demonstrations in the territory and over 120 protesters were martyred by Indian troops and police personnel within a period of three months in 2010.

Ashraf Mattoo, father of Tufail Mattoo, in a media interview in Srinagar said that the authorities were shielding the killers. He said instead of bringing the culprits to the book, the authorities had virtually waged a war against us.”

He said that all the eyewitnesses had categorically stated that they had seen two policemen chasing and firing on his son. “A woman present on spot had even caught hold of a policeman who fired at Tufail. The irony is that the official account has been given credence over the evidence of eyewitnesses and this development is shameful,” he added.

Meanwhile, Hurriyet leaders including Javaid Ahmad Mir and Mohammad Yousuf Naqash, today, visited Martyrs Graveyard at Eidgah in Srinagar to attend seventh martyrdom anniversary of Tufail Matoo. The Hurriyet leaders said seven years have passed but the authorities had failed to provide justices to the family of martyr Tufail Ahmad Matoo.

On the other hand, Hurriyet leaders Bilal Siddiqui, Molvi Bashir and Ghulam Ahmad Gulzar in their statements also paid tributes to martyr Mattoo. They said that hundreds of innocent educated youth had suffered the fate of Ph.D scholar Gulzar Ahamad Wani. Wani was released 16 years of imprisonment for the crime he never committed.
